PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN PATIENTS WITH AN IMPLANTABLE CARDIOVERTER DEFI BRILLATOR. BEYOND THE RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary

The safety of the sport in ICD patients is not well established. The clinical practice guidelines and current recommendations are quite restrictive with such activities, despite of physical activity in patients with cardiovascular problems has shown significant benefits. The prevalence of ICD patients is increasing, mainly due to the increasing number of indications and benefits on survival. That is why it is increasingly common to find this type of patient. In recent years has become particularly relevant to study the benefits and safety of this type of activity in this subgroup of patients. The research focuses primarily on the safety of physical activity in patients with ICD, and benefits at the level of physical ability and psychosocial aspects and quality of life. A meta-analysis, and a recent multicenter registry have shed light on this kind of issues and open new questions for future research. Some data provided recently say even competitive activity can be safe provided that a careful assessment of the underlying pathology is performed and the level of activity is appropriate to the programming device. Decisions regarding this type of activity should be individualized and adapted to each patient and each sport. There are still many aspects that provide evidence on this issue but everything seems to indicate that the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks.
